Anything that can hurt our feet, can hurt our furkid's paws too! Harsh elements such as glass fragment, fertilizer and other chemicals found on the ground can hurt or cause injury to your furkid's paws, making it hard for them to walk or run comfortably. Before bringing your furkid out on a walk, consider the floor temperature and type of ground surface that your furkid will likely walk on. Walking on concrete grounds and even on sand on a hot afternoon may hurt their pawpad. These is probably one of reasons why some dogs prefer to walk on grass patches when given a choice. That's also likely why some furkids will avoid walking on metal grills on pavements.
Here are a few reasons why every dog should own a pair of booties:
- The rubber sole protects their paws from burns
- It reduces their exposure to ticks and insects by eliminating direct contact on the ground
- Paws are cleaner especially during wet weather (with waterproof booties)
- Prevent paws from coming into direct contact with dangerous elements such as glass fragments or toxic chemicals
- Save the trouble of cleaning their paws after walks
- Slip on a pair of shoes when he's calm. Do make sure it's not too tight but also not too loose. Don't forget to reward your dog with lots of praise and/or treats for wearing the shoes even if it's only for a while.
- Practice makes perfect. Initially, they may walk oddly just like how we are on our first attempt at wearing killer heels. Practice with your dog at home to make sure he's comfortable walking around in the shoes.
- Remember positive reinforcement and consistency is key to making this a success.
Like humans, different shoe designs and style will affect the fit a little differently. Always measure from the heel of the paw to the tip of the toe. Try not to get shoes that fits too snugly. Be sure to leave a little allowance to allow a more comfortable fitting. Paw size are best measured when your dog is standing up.
