Should I let my pet wear clothes?

Is it really necessary for pets to wear clothes?

While dressing up your pet doesn't hurt, it is crucial that your pet is kept comfortable at all times, with or without clothes. In countries with colder climate, pet clothes come in helpful in keeping pets warm. Depending on the breed, size and even age, some dogs will benefit from having a sweater to stay warm.

Why should I let my dog wear clothes in Singapore's tropical climate?
For an avid pet lover, a dog is not just a dog. They are a part of the family, someone whom we love and want to protect. These days, dog owners do organise outings for their furkids to socialise and have fun or visit dog cafes during weekends. On such occasions where so many furkids gather, it makes sense to have your little one dressed up in a simple tee or a bow tie to make it easier for you to identify him or her apart from other furkids, especially if they are of the same breed and colour.

As your dog socialise and engage in play, there is also a risk of coming into contact with another dog who has ticks on his or her body. Besides, the usual preventive measures, having your furkid wear clothes does work as an additional buffer.

We know some pets absolutely need to relieve themselves outside, rain or shine. Having a raincoat will prevent them from getting all wet while they relieve themselves outside, especially during the rainy season. If your furkid has to relieve him/herself on a grass patch, it may be good to consider training them to wear shoes since most dogs prefer to do their business at the same spot and we don't know if that spot is infested with ticks. Wearing shoes can also act as an additional preventive measure to prevent the paws of your furkid from getting into contact with bugs on the floor.

Besides that, pavements can get really hot on some afternoons, so having your dog wear shoes can protect their paw pad from the scorching pavement. Lightweight dog clothes can also prevent sunburn on some small breeds which doesn't have an undercoat.

Choosing suitable pet clothes
Firstly, do consider the material of the clothes. While wool can keep your pet warm, it is not suitable for Singapore's weather. Secondly, take into consideration the design and comfort level of the clothes. For example, check if there are any hooks, buttons or zips that can be chewed off and swallowed. Thirdly, take measurements of your dog to ensure that the clothes you buy will fit, especially in areas around the neck, the largest part of the chest and back. This will ensure that it's not too tight for your pet and it won't get caught easily during movement.

Sometimes, going au natural might be the best so long as you keep your dog's coat healthy. Afterall, all we want is for our pets to stay comfortable and happy.

Have a pawsome week ahead!
